NEET 2027 Syllabus and Exam Pattern: The Complete Subject-Wise Guide
Most NEET preparation goes wrong not because a student studies too little, but because they study the wrong proportion of the right things. Fixing that starts with knowing exactly what the paper asks for.
Here is the NEET 2027 structure, subject by subject, with an honest view of where the marks actually live.
The exam at a glance

Question split: Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Botany 45, Zoology 45.
That last line contains the single most important strategic fact about NEET: Biology is 50% of the paper. 360 of the 720 marks. A student who is excellent at Physics but average at Biology is structurally disadvantaged in a way that no amount of Physics brilliance fixes.
The syllabus: NCERT, and then NCERT again
The NEET 2027 syllabus follows the NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 curriculum for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, in line with the rationalised NCERT syllabus. As of now, NTA has announced no formal syllabus change for 2027 — the CBT shift is a mode change, not a content change.
Treat that as a gift. It means:
The book that defines your exam costs less than 500 rupees.
Every reference book you buy is a supplement to NCERT, never a replacement.
"Out of syllabus" is a real, checkable category. If it is not traceable to NCERT, deprioritise it.
Always cross-check the final chapter list against the official Information Bulletin when NTA publishes it, since deleted or restored topics are announced there.
Biology: 90 questions, 360 marks
This is where ranks are made. And Biology in NEET is not a "reasoning" subject — it is a precision recall subject. The questions are frequently built on a single line of NCERT text.
Highest-yield areas, broadly:
Human Physiology (Digestion, Breathing, Body Fluids, Excretion, Locomotion, Neural Control, Chemical Coordination)
Genetics and Evolution (Principles of Inheritance, Molecular Basis of Inheritance)
Cell Biology (Cell: The Unit of Life, Cell Cycle, Biomolecules)
Plant Physiology (Photosynthesis, Respiration, Plant Growth)
Ecology and Environment
Reproduction (Human Reproduction, Reproductive Health, Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants)
Biotechnology (Principles and Processes, Applications)
How to actually study it: read NCERT line by line, including the boxes, the tables, the figure captions and the exercises. Then read it again. Then again. Three passes of NCERT beat one pass of any 900-page reference book. Diagrams matter more than students expect — label every figure yourself, on blank paper, from memory.
Chemistry: 45 questions, 180 marks
Chemistry is really three subjects wearing one name, and each one needs a different method.
Physical Chemistry — numerical, formula-driven. Mole Concept, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Solutions. Practice-heavy. Treat it like Physics.
Organic Chemistry — mechanism-driven. General Organic Chemistry (GOC) is the foundation; if inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation and stability logic are not solid, every later chapter becomes memorisation. Then: Hydrocarbons, Haloalkanes, Alcohols/Phenols/Ethers, Aldehydes/Ketones/Acids, Amines, Biomolecules, Polymers.
Inorganic Chemistry — recall-driven, and almost entirely NCERT-verbatim in NEET. Periodic Table trends, Chemical Bonding, p-Block, d- and f-Block, Coordination Compounds. Many students under-invest here because it feels boring. It is also the most reliably scoring section in the paper for exactly that reason.
Physics: 45 questions, 180 marks
The section students fear most, and the one where an honest strategy pays best.
Class 11 core: Units and Measurements, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work Energy Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, Oscillations and Waves.
Class 12 core: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and AC, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices.
NEET Physics is generally more formula-application than JEE Physics and less multi-concept. That does not make it easy — it makes it speed-sensitive. The realistic target is not "solve every Physics question"; it is "solve 38 of 45 with near-perfect accuracy, in under 55 minutes."
Modern Physics, Semiconductor Devices, and Ray Optics are traditionally high return-on-effort areas. Rotational Motion and Thermodynamics are traditionally high-effort. Sequence accordingly.
Understanding the negative marking
+4 and −1 sounds mild until you do the arithmetic. Four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer. A student who attempts 170 questions with 75% accuracy scores lower than a student who attempts 150 with 90% accuracy.
Run the numbers yourself:
170 attempted, 128 correct, 42 wrong = 512 − 42 = 470
150 attempted, 135 correct, 15 wrong = 540 − 15 = 525

A realistic two-year coverage plan
Class 11 (Year 1)
Complete the entire Class 11 syllabus with the school year, chapter by chapter, alongside your board classes.
One NCERT reading pass of every Biology chapter within a week of finishing it in class.
Weekly subject-wise tests. Monthly cumulative tests.
Begin CBT-format mocks once a month from the second half of the year.
Class 12 (Year 2)
Complete the Class 12 syllabus by roughly December.
Simultaneously revise Class 11 — this is the step students skip and later regret, because roughly half the paper comes from Class 11.
January onwards: full-length CBT mocks weekly, then twice weekly.
Final 45 days: no new material. Revision, NCERT re-reading, and error-log work only.
Where students lose marks that they had already earned
Not revising Class 11 in Class 12. Half the paper, quietly forgotten.
Reading Biology once and moving on. NEET Biology is a memory exam; memory needs repetition scheduled, not hoped for.
Skipping diagram labelling. Then losing four marks on a figure they had "read."

Collecting books instead of finishing one. One good reference per subject, finished, beats five, sampled.

NEET 2027 is 180 questions in 180 minutes, half of them Biology, all of them anchored in NCERT. Build your plan around that sentence and most of your strategy decisions make themselves.
